Notable Rinks

I initially planned on calling this page “Coldest Rinks” as not all rinks were created alike.  Some are unbearable cold.  I wanted to know peoples views on the coldest rinks in Nova Scotia.  But, then I went to a rink which impressed me so much, I thought it would be cooler (no pun intended) to talk about the rinks which have left me in awe, or not.

* Fountain Rink – St. Margaret’s Bay – I was advised before ever going to this rink that it was the ”Hilton” of all HRM rinks.  It is a five star rink for sure and it has nothing to do with temperature.  It is just a great rink.  Firstly, the facility is new with all that brings, including a store which made the youngest member of our family quite happy as the ten dollars in her pocket was burning a hole through it.  Fountain Rink actually has two adjacent rinks with lots of fan seating. It’s environmentally friendly like no rink I have ever seen – the bathrooms lights are on motion sensors, they have half flush toilets and scent free and dye free hand soap.  Like nothing I have ever seen.

* Rocky Lake Dome – Bedford – I have never been to a rink without seats before today, ever.  This rink has no seats.  Hard to keep the parents off the boards as there is nowhere else for us to be.  It was cold and did not appear to have a canteen of any kind.  Which was too bad, because I was really thirsty and wanted a drink.  The rink is under a big white bubble dome.  You have to go through an air lock to get in and out of it, causing quite a log jam for players and spectators alike as they stream in and out of the rink.  I understand this rink is new.  I must be missing some intergral part of why it is the way it is…  I will let you know if I figure it out.
